One of the new marketing buzz words is SoLoMo - social media, local and mobile. According to TJS, Location-aware technology coupled with high mobile device usage is "increasing the ability of merchants to tailor marketing efforts – like content, deals, and offers – to individuals, greatly increasing the opportunity for engagement."
Email marketing is still working - with the right list, offer and headline. Smart marketers are segmenting the email lists to perform almost one-to-one marketing today. Also, emails are being socially integrated in order to make it easy for readers to share your content. Now the trick is the content has to be worth sharing (i.e., valuable).
One point is that everything today is on the other person's time. Gary Vee talks about how hard it is to get attention today. That's why content is key. It has to be about THEM, not you. Content has to be valuable or entertaining.
"Grow your list: the more online & social users that see your content/messages, the better chance you have of gaining new subscribers." [ecircle]
"Provide another platform to connect with your audience: each digital channel and platform including email, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs etc, enables you to communicate and interact with people in different ways."
"Give email subscribers more options: generate further customer engagement with your company or brand on different channels. While email is great, it’s not the only option, so give your customers a choice!"
Make certain that you can be found on local search sites (Yelp, Bing, Y! Local, Google, MerchantCircle).
Also, mobile web surfing is growing. Is your website responsive (mobile friendly)?
Social also means forums and communities. See How Cbeyond Created a Spark in its Yammer Community
