Cook Report on IMS

IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the gear used in cellular infrastructure. Now it is moving towards the PSTN. The Internet will become a Walled Garden. You want to use Google, but VZ & SBC have a partnership with Yahoo. You want eBay, but that's outside the garden. Make no mistakes about it Google, P2P, blogs and Skype are scaring the Tele-Barons, the Cable Heads, Media Moguls, MPAA, RIAA, Homeland Security, neo-Cons, and Micro$oft, who are using lobbyists to wall this garden back in.
"The latest atrocious piece of test legislation to surface is the 77 pages of Barton-Dingell," according to Cook.
Fred Goldstein at ionary wrote an interesting essay called "fat wasteband". Fred explains the carriers dreams for total control, and how IP destroys that dream. Hence, IMS. Fred's article was in response to a conference keynote speech by Roderick Randall of Vesbridge Partners called "Don't Get Skyped". My own paranoid view of an IMS world can be read here.
