BPL Satus: Is it Coming?
Networking Pipeline asks Broadband Over Power Lines: Ready For A Big Breakthrough? Because BPL has some big investors - Google, IBM, GoldmanSachs - many "analysts" are saying it will work. My question is where? The power grid infrastructure is old and antiquated. BPL has many radio interference issues. The upper limit of BPL is 4MB - much less than cable or DSL. BPL will be a niche player in markets that the Duopoly don't touch.
A sidebar article states: "One way of handling the differences between the power and broadband businesses is for utilities to offer broadband through joint ventures.... Duquesne Broadband's wireless system works by sending a broadband signal through power lines using the medium voltage technology from Amperion, Inc. Amperion's PowerWifi wireless transmitter provides the last mile connection to homes. For hotels, apartment building or other multi-family facilities, Duquesne Broadband uses Telkonet's iWire System to connect directly with users."
