WI-TV VS. WIMAX

WI-TV VS. WIMAX A new wireless broadband technology being developed by the IEEE could prove a headache for WiMAX. Last October, an IEEE group started work on a 802.22 standard that would utilize analog TV spectrum bands freed up as broadcasters switch to digital television. Essentially, the group is creating a standard for physical and MAC layers and the air interface for unlicensed devices operating in the choice UHF/VHF spectrum below 900 MHz. That spectrum is known as Wi-TV because of its better signal range, at least compared to the wireless broadband technologies operating between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz. Problem is, WiMAX supporters also want to develop for that spectrum. And Intel is pushing strongly to open UHF/VHF bands for WiMAX. Both sides are publicly bickering. If both groups don't reach a compromise, there'll likely be a free for all over control of the prized spectrum below 900 MHz that could damage both sides. http://www.americasnetwork.com/americasnetwork/article/articleDetail.jsp?id= 147751
